|
The Hattori Foundation was established as an Educational Trust by the Hattori Family and granted charity status in 1992. The aim of the Foundation in the field of music is to encourage and assist exceptionally talented young instrumental soloists or chamber ensembles who are British Nationals or resident in the UK and whose talent and achievements give promise of an international career. From May 2015 the Hattori Foundation took on the lease and business activities of 1901 Arts Club. We share and mark the sad death of Founder Trustee and, since 2018, Patron of the Hattori Foundation, Mrs Toyoko Hattori.
Mrs Hattori, born in Tokyo in 1926, lived in Vienna since 1977. From 1957 to 1960, she studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. She held professorships at the Toho Gakuen Music Academy and the Tokyo Geijutsu University (Tokyo University of the Arts) until 1977. She performed extensively as a violin soloist. For her support of musical activities, she received numerous awards, including the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun in 2005 and the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2009. |
Erich Gruenberg OBE (1924-2020)Erich Gruenberg's career was marked by successes as leader of the Stockholm Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also an international soloist and chamber musician, as well as a much loved professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He was one of the Founding Trustees of the Hattori Foundation and served as chair until 2018 when he was elevated to Patron of the Foundation.
He was extremely kind and supportive, and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. |

Dr Martin Lovett OBE (1927-2020)In addition to Martin's long and distinguished performing career, most notably with the Amadeus Quartet, Martin was a founding Trustee of the Hattori Foundation in 1992 and served in that role until March 2018 when he was appointed a Patron of the Hattori Foundation.
His quick wit, generous mentoring and great musicianship were a gift to us all. |
